The Academic row above and the Research row below are two different paths to the same population: Academic is a durable, no-expiry key at Lab's limits, issued by hand straight from an email — no Stripe, no card, nothing to renew. Research runs through the self-serve checkout with a 100%-off code, useful if you would rather pick your own tier or already have a checkout flow in mind, but it renews annually and depends on Stripe checkout being open on this deployment. Free software for research, evaluation and personal use is also the underlying licence on this API's own code (PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0, see the repository's NOTICE) — the Academic tier is that same principle applied to the hosted service, not just the source.
The price you sign at is the price you keep. These prices track our cost and demand and are reviewed monthly. A subscription stays on the price it started on until it is deliberately migrated, so a change here applies to new subscribers — an existing subscription is not re-rated, and keeps its price until you change plan or renew a contract at a new one.
Calls are counted per UTC day and reset at 00:00 UTC; every billable response tells you where you stand in x-hla-verify-daily-limit, -daily-remaining and -daily-reset. The endpoints are batched, so the second number matters as much as the first: one /v1/normalize call carries up to your tier's cap of typings. /healthz, /docs, /pricing, /v1/checkout, /v1/beta-signup and /v1/research-access are free and never counted, and /v1/verify accepts 200,000 characters of text on every tier including Free. Lab was called pro before 2026-09: existing pro keys keep working at Lab's limits.
Subscribing lands you on a success page showing your API key once — copy it then; it is also written to your Stripe customer record. Cancel anytime from the customer portal link in your receipt, which revokes the key.
